Here’s the elaborated upon description of a precis.

Sept. 26, 2019

Extension: We’ll turn in our Narrative Portfolios on Monday (Sept. 30) instead of Friday (Sept. 27). This makes more sense to have the weekend to revise and compile everything. DO make sure to have all materials printed and with you at the start of 8th hour on Monday.

Sept. 24, 2019

We’ll discuss “exemplar” Personal Narratives and college essays in two blocks today and tomorrow: 1. the first as a whole group, starting with the “Instructor’s Memo” of “An Embarrassment of Pandas” (https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/english100coursereader/chapter/an-embarrassment-of-pandas/) and 2. each of us individually reading 5-8 of the 11 college entrance essays, journaling while reading (https://www.collegeessayguy.com/blog/college-essay-examples)

Sept. 20, 2019

We read the “RHETORIC AND NARRATIVE” section last week, so today we just need to read the rest of this foundational piece for the course: https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/english100coursereader/front-matter/approaches-to-rhetoric-writing-and-revision-in-english-100/ We’ll discuss it after we’ve all read it in class today. If you’re absent, please read closely.

Sept. 19, 2019

During our workshopping, we can use this checklist if it’s helpful during revisions: https://blog.collegevine.com/11-point-checklist-for-before-you-submit-your-college-application/

Sept. 17, 2019

We’ll take time to read Kepka’s “Narrative Writing” in our online reader: https://wisc.pb.unizin.org/english100coursereader/chapter/narrative-writing/. While reading consider points to discuss either as a whole group or while revising each other’s personal narratives on Thursday.

Sept. 9, 2019

Here’s a link to Eggers’ op/ed piece, “Serve or Fail,” which we’ll be using our first reading day to dig into on Tuesday of this week: https://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/13/opinion/serve-or-fail.html.

Also, on Wednesday each of us wants to attend RCTC’s Success Day, details of which are elaborated upon here: https://www.rctc.edu/studentlife/successday/. RCTC is really excited about the opportunities they have planned for you, so to meet their expectations we will not physically meet on Sept. 11th so you can attend their event.

Sept. 3, 2019

Several students currently enrolled in the English 1117 class haven’t completed the necessary steps RCTC requires to take the course. All students need to:

  • place into the class via RCTC’s Accuplacer placement  test, or may meet the threshold depending on their ACT or MCA reading test score.
  • complete an online RCTC application
  • fill out and return a release of information form, which they and their parent/guardian need to sign.

Jamie Johnson will be administering the Accuplacer 1st hour on Thursday if you need it. All of the enrollment steps must be completed by Friday or you will have to be dropped from the class. An email went out to all of the families of students in the class who were still missing one or more of the pieces, along with a copy of the release form required. If you have a question about whether you are missing any of items required, stop by the Guidance Office and Brenda and/or Bethany can check on it. Mayo will have no choice but to drop anyone who doesn’t fulfill the RCTC requirements this week.

Aug. 27, 2019 (Always the date showing when posts go live for you to see)

Welcome to the unofficial start to our journey to together this year in Mayo’s newest course: English 1117! I’m thrilled to be hired as an instructor with RCTC in order to deliver this course to you at Mayo. We are in the midst of earning approval of our syllabus and you’ll see it posted on this website ASAP. All of you should have a TECH ID and access to RCTC’s resources; I, however, am not yet awarded access to their system because I’m still linked to my previous professorial status at Mankato State. #technologyrules

Please Read their S3_Concurrent_Student_Handbook ASAP, ideally before Thurs., Sept. 5th so you can ask Ms. Johnson, RCTC’s counselor, questions and definitely before Mon., Sept. 9th so you can sign RCTC’s compliance agreement in class.
